Wilkie, Jr. Henry "Hank" Wilkie passed away Tuesday night, September 6, 2005, at home in West Grove, PA after a long illness. He was the cherished husband for over 53 years of Diane Lutz Wilkie, who preceded him in death last November. Born August 26, 1921 in Buffalo, NY, one of 5 children of Henry E., Sr. and Queenie Wilkie, Hank attended school in Williamsville, where he ran track, hunted, fished and was a Boy Scout. Henry was instrumental in re-establishing communications throughout post-war Europe including preparation for transmission of the Nuremberg Trials. Upon his return to the states, Hank was an employee of the DuPont Company, starting in Buffalo, then Jeffersonville, IN and finally Wilmington, DE in various management positions, retiring in 1977. From 1956 on, he was an amateur radio operator (K3AZH) and led "ham" operators' civil defense efforts in New Castle County, DE in the late 50s and early 60s. In his later years, he enjoyed daily radio chats with his "ham" friends. In 1965, Hank and Diane bought a 200-year-old farmhouse outside of West Grove, where he enjoyed raising his family, refurbishing the house, skeet shooting, gardening, raising animals, golf, hunting and fishing. | 475 | Obituary of Henry E. Wilkie Jr. (Wilmington News-Journal, 8 Sep 2005, page B6) | Henry E. He attended Iowa State University, but left to enlist in the Army Signal Corps after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Army sent him to classes in radio communications at the University of Buffalo, then to active duty in Europe, where he rose to the rank of sergeant, saw action at the Battle of the Bulge, was an expert marksman, and was part of the forces that liberated concentration camps at the end of the war. Hank will be lovingly remembered by his son, Robert (and Mary Lynn) Wilkie of Elkton, MD; daughters, Roberta (and Rhett) McManus of Oxford, PA and Robin (and Roger) Nalepa of Newark, DE; grandchildren, Jamie and Andrea Wilkie, Pete and Mark McManus, and Mike, Drew and Katie Tolbert; and his brother, Richard Wilkie of Fort Worth, TX; as well as extended family and many friends. His family will receive friends at the Edward L. Collins Funeral Home, 86 Pine Street, Oxford, PA on Friday, September 9, from 2:30-3:30 pm,followed by a celebratory service at 3:30. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Henry's memory to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Rd., Wilmington, DE 19810. |
