| 1136 | Calamity Strikes; But Wedding Must Go On (Roselle Register, 11 Dec 1968, page 20) | Calamity Strikes; But Wedding Must Go On Last minute events just before the wedding of Shirley Jacobs and Douglas Byer read like a comedy of errors. The groom forgot the ring, stage fright apparently triggered the illness of the flower girl and the father of the bridegroom gave his son the wrong keys to the rented car. However, all was remedied: the groom’s parents: the Joseph Byers of Des Plaines, dashed home for the ring; the little flower girl was replaced; and the key situation was eventually straightened out. (note: a line of text is missing from the original story) …senville, and Doug, had known each other since early childhood in Des Plaines and had “gone steady” at the age of 13. Then the Jacobs family moved from Des Plaines to Bensenville and it appeared that the romance was over. Four years passed during which Shirley and Doug didn’t see each other; however, they met again on Christmas Eve, 1966, and their romance bloomed anew. A year later, also on Christmas Eve, they became engaged and were married the following November. Fr. Anchor officiated at the 4 p.m. candlelight, double ring wedding service on Nov. 2 in All Saint Episcopal Church in Chicago. Now the couple will be separated again as the groom is entering the Navy this month while the bride will remain with her parents in their Bensenville home at 221 Poppy Lane. For her marriage Shirley chose a tiered, hooped skirt gown of chantilly lace fashioned with fitted waist, long, pointed sleeves and a scalloped neckline. Pearls and sequins trimmed the front of the gown. A full, shoulder-length veil and a bouquet of white roses completed her bridal ensemble as she was given in marriage by her father. The bride’s sister, Mrs. Carl Schneider of Wood Dale, served as matron of honor, and bridesmaid were the groom’s sister, Sandra Byer of Des Plaines, Karen Overbay of Bensenville, Ginger Wieczor of Bellwood and Reta Rusco of Chicago. All wore identical gowns in gold and maize fashioned with empire waistlines and long sleeves with ruffles at the neckline and on the sleeves. Their flowers were yellow roses, white carnations and bronze mums with yellow and gold streamers. Up until minutes before the wedding, the bride’s niece, 5-year-old Laurie Schneider of Wood Dale, was to have been the flower girl. Taking over Laurie’s post was a 5-year-old cousin of the bride, Martha Madden, who wore the gold and maize gown that was fashioned identically to the bridesmaids’ gowns. Martha also carried Laurie’s basket which contained the same flowers as the bridesmaids’ bouquets. Mike Statton of Des Plaines was the groom’s best man and ushers were a cousin, James Leighton of Markham, Richard Anderson and Allen Alderman of Park Ridge and Mike Jackson of Chicago. The reception for 150 guests was held at the Greentree Inn, Bensenville, where Mrs. Jacobs received in a silver gray and gold lame suit with mink trim. Mrs. Beyer chose a turquoise dress with chiffon overlay with beading on the collar. Both mothers had white orchid corsages. The new Mrs. Byer is a graduate of Fenton High School. She also studied at McCormac and DuPage Junior Colleges and is now with Greyhound Van Lines, Inc., Northlake. The groom was graduated from Maine East Township High School and attended McCormac Junior College for one year. The couple honeymooned for 10 days at Canton, Miss. |
