Transient Workers Remembered Every so often someone will ask a graveworker at the Greenwood Cemetery where the transient workers are buried. They ask because they think their father or some other relative might be buried there. But they will never know for sure. The graves aren't marked and the records of those buried there were either lost, destroyed, or never kept. All that remains is about one square block of grassy land. And up to last week there was no way a stranger would know that someone was even buried there. But Robert Gould of Hayward changed all that. He bought a plaque and had it erected on the old Potters Field. It rests as a lonely, single memorial to all those transient workers who lived here briefly, died and are now buried in unmarked plots. They are the men who lived here during the depression years. They stayed at the transient workers camp which was located where the hospital is now. The camp provided shelter and food. Many old timers from the logging days found their home there. They helped work the farm which gave them their food and some worked where they could find jobs. When they died they were buried in and amongst a Jack Pine forest. Gould said that there were white wood crosses over each grave at one time. Petunias were planted on some. But at one point, the Jack Pines were cut down to help pay for burial expenses, Gould said. They land was razed over and any record of the estimated 200 workers buried there was lost. Even the names were not recorded. Some names were never known. "I thought it should be memorialized," Gould said. "It's part of the history of Hayward and it should be remembered." He got the idea "out of the blue." His mother died in 1974 and when he was at the cemetery choosing a site, some ladies walked up to George Koerpel, the funeral director, and asked where the transient workers were buried, he said. "I thought it was a lost part of Hayward," he said. He thought about it for awhile and in 1975 asked then mayor Bob Anderson what he thought. Anderson said it was a good idea and that people would appreciate it. Last June near Flag Day, Gould approached the city council asking for permission to erect a plaque there. He received it and made plans for it to be erected. He bought the plaque from Northern Granite Corporation out of Barron who donated the stone and George Leslie of Hayward, a salesman for the firm, donated his commission. So now, when people ask where the transient workers are buried, there is at least some mention of their lives. Bob is survived by his two sisters, Betty Clancy of Georgia, and Helen (Robert) Hufford of Hawaii; nieces; and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at noon on Thursday, April 26 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Hayward. Father Bill Green officiated. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery, Hayward.
